Should Public Schools Offer Single-Sex Education?
Yes. This student didn't not complete his assignment.
~Jake Z. | No. Same-sex education is having certain or all classes with the same gender. It is considered illegal and discriminatory- stated by the American Civil Liberties Union. Certain experts say that single-sex education is actually beneficial to students because students no longer have the opposite gender as a distraction, don’t reinforce gender stereotypes, gives students a type of confidence not found in co-ed schools, and different techniques can be used to help increase students’ success. However, this isn’t true. It doesn’t necessarily matter if a class is co-ed or not, because the opposite will quite often, be a distraction. Gender stereotypes in the general subject of learning are generally wrong. Each student learns in their own way, and there are many different varieties of stereotypes that could be used to teach specific single-sex classes. This would, as it seems, be a hassle for a teacher- who would have to take specific classes on how to teach unique techniques for single-sex classes. But what teacher has the time/money to take such classes, especially on a teacher’s salary?
Studies have shown that both boys and girls lose confidence when in same-sex classes, such as physical education. Also, many studies have shown that the higher the percentage of girls in a co-ed class, the higher confidence EVERYONE in the class has. The boys and girls in same-sex education will eventually leave high school, and go to work in the “real world,” and be forced to work in co-ed workplaces. Do teachers/principals think it is right to limit the students’ future abilities to be with the opposite gender? ~Ramona F. |
